Design and performance investigation of a novel 3DOF compact MR damper

Abstract Magnetorheological (MR) fluid based dampers have been established as an alternative to classical hydraulic with proportional electromagnetic valves under vibration processes which demand adaptive damping forces. Almost all MR-dampers are spatially 1-degree-of-freedom (DOF) dampers, having only one axis or direction of force generation. In many technical applications there exist movements in more than spatial DOF, eventually necessitating damper. Because this, the is required not but directions, yet adjustable. this work, a new design 3DOF MR damper proposed allow three directions within device. The underlying motivation integrate device potentially reduce installation space compared separate 1DOF dampers. basic idea construction use chamber several distributed control elements at different positions chamber. electromagnets, generating magnetic field so that total DOFs can be damped individually. Experiments and investigation made, where damper’s behavior analyzed single DOF also DOF. It shown, concept generate DOFs, both individually together. Moreover, generated dominant specific direction, meanwhile minimum other orthogonal it.
